The Gospel and Community

The gospel is inextricably connected to community. The gospel is a message about reconciliation. That means at the heart of the gospel is relationships. God has created us for relationship; for relationship with himself and for relationship with each other. God has chosen and redeemed his people, also known as bride of Christ or the church, to be a community formed as the missionary agent to carry the gospel to the world. True biblical community is centered on our participation in the gospel. It isn't centered on our need for fellowship, but on God's purpose through His story, and our service in that mission.

The Gospel and Truth

Everyone, even the skeptic, holds to certain presuppositions. Our reasonable presuppositions are truth does exist and begins with God and he has communicated his truth to us through the Bible. There we find the word of truth which is the gospel. The truth about our spiritual situation before God is that we were enemies of God in our rebellion and sin against God. We were totally depraved and had rejected God and his sovereign reign in our lives. However, the truth of the gospel is, "When the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life." Titus 3:4-7

Love Beyond Measure

God demands nothing less than our wholehearted commitment. He will not tolerate spiritual adultery. But we’re sure to go astray in our pursuit of godliness if we fail to see the teaching of Scripture as coming from a God who loves us, who has provided generously for us, and who – out of love – has given us guidelines on how we are to live. The obedience God wants is grounded on the deep conviction that he loves us with a love beyond measure.

Prayer for All Seasons

What is your first response to trials or difficulties? Is it to become irritated, discouraged, depressed? Is it to complain? James – the in-your-face apostle – suggests a better way in the last chapter of his hard-hitting letter. He prescribes prayer for all seasons.

Faith in What?

No one likes to be judged and Jesus warns about judging others. But is James saying in this passage that we aren¹t supposed to comment on what is right or wrong when we see a friend blowing it because that is judging them? Clearly in the context of his rebuke about the quarrels and conflicts between these believers, James' warning stems from their conflict which leads them to slander, judge and criticize others. We do this because we desire to manipulate and control people instead of trusting in God and His sovereignty. This desire to control comes out in the way we attempt to plan for the future devoid of God. James reminds us that we really have no control over others, the future or our very lives. We are but vapors who pass away quickly. The real way to live is to realize God is sovereign and to humble ourselves in surrender to His will instead of our own.

James 3:13-18

Have you ever prayed for wisdom? In this passage James compares the wisdom from above with that which is earthly, natural and demonic. Wisdom from above is seen in our actions and is born out of a heart that is surrendered to Christ. James helps us recognize false wisdom in ourselves and challenges us to cultivate the character of our heart that will produce wise actions.

Words Reflecting the Heart

Using the tangible example of what we say to others, James demonstrates how real biblical faith expresses itself in how we live. James says that one way to determine if someone is spiritually mature is to see if they have learned how to control what they say. However, according to Jesus, what we say is not the real issue, it is the reflection of what is going on in our hearts. That is the issue! God desires to work true heart transformation through the power of the gospel so that our speech is reflective of His work in our lives. It’s not mere outward conformance but inner transformation that is the goal.

Faith and Works

This passage is the crux for the Letter of James. Just what is the relationship between faith and works? The apparent contradiction between James' message and that of Paul is cleared up when we see that the gospel Paul preached, salvation by grace through faith and not by works, was actually approved by James himself (Gal. 2, Acts 15). They don’t disagree. What we see here with James is that real biblical faith, the kind of faith that saves, will always show up in our actions. James shows what salvation looks like on the outside but he never claims that we can have it without faith. We need to examine our lives to see if there is the fruit related to salvation. If there isn’t we may be deceived, our faith is not genuine and we are not really saved.

Playing Favorites

Do you have a favorite restaurant? A favorite movie? Playing favorites is fine in some areas, but not in others. James has some strong words about showing favoritism to the wealthy. Not a problem for you? But do you ever treat people differently based upon their ethnicity, appearance, education, talents, accomplishments or position in society? Because they’re part of your subculture? Then the message of James 2 is for you. Strong medicine for a serious illness.

Faith to Hear and Do

When facing trials or temptations, God has called us to listen to His Word carefully which speaks truth into our lives. We start with the Word and faith, but Christianity is about more than just listening. It’s about acting on what we know to do. Those who hear and don’t act deceive themselves. How we live our lives will demonstrate what we truly believe.

Faith That Overcomes Temptation

As James continues his teaching on trials, he addresses the financial trials of faith that these persecuted Jewish Christians are facing. The poor Christians must learn to trust that God will take care of them because they are His children. The rich Christians must learn to trust God and not their wealth because wealth will not last for eternity. Whether wealthy or poor, for those who persevere in their faith in God there awaits the reward of life with God. In the midst of the trials God sends, we will face temptations that come from within us. We must make a choice. Faith in God will lead us to obedience which leads to spiritual maturity. Disbelief in the goodness of God leads us to disobedience and sin which James says leads to death.

Faith That's Been Tested

James writes to Jews who believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior, scattered throughout the Roman Empire, facing some incredibly difficult trials. Here we learn that we can experience joy in the middle of any difficult circumstance if our faith in God has been tested and proven to be sure. This kind of faith can handle the bumps, the big bumps, in the road. A mature faith realizes that God is in control and nothing escapes His attention or His plans. With this confidence, James encourages us to come to God in faith believing that God will give us what we need to navigate through the trials we encounter.

In 1Cor. 15:12-21 we see the centrality of Christ's resurrection for Christian belief and the resulting ramifications. If Christ has not risen from the dead then we are still dead in our sins, we bear the consequences of our sin on ourselves, our faith is totally useless, Christianity is a sham and we are pitiful fools.
Canaanized

In these last few chapters of Judges, which is a parallel of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen 19), we finally understand what has been going wrong in Israel. Israel has become Canaanized! They were to be a light to the nations around them but now through their disobedience have become the very thing that God commanded them to destroy. Here we see that outward is only symptomatic of a deeper problem, a heart that needs transformation by the work of the gospel. Judges 21:25 says, "In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes." What is missing in Israel is a king, the only King that can rule our hearts.

In Judges 13-16 we see that Samson is not too different from us. He is led wildly by his passions and makes a lot of stupid decisions. However, God is so sovereign that He can even use our brokenness and bad decisions to accomplish His purposes for His glory.
The God Who Believes

In Judges 6-7 we find Israel once again caught in the painful cycle of Disobedience, Discipline, Despair and Deliverance. This time God raises up a man named Gideon who is full of doubt to deliver Israel. Gideon doubts God's presence, doubts he can be used by God, doubts God word and doubts God's ability to do the impossible. We, all too often, can relate to these doubts. In each of these areas of doubt, God comes along and graciously and patiently answers Gideon's doubt and works with him. Yes, God is there. Yes, He can use any body He wants. Yes, He will come through and do what He says He will. And finally, yes, God is able to do the impossible. The whole story is a lesson in faith and teaches us to get our eyes off of ourselves and our situations and back on to God. God is sovereign and it's all about His glory, His plans and His ability to do what He wants. It's not about us!

Saved by the Babes

As pastor David continues our study in the book of Judges, the painfully cyclical pattern for Israel of "The Four D's" (Disobedience, Discipline, Despair and Deliverance) are clearly seen in chapters 4 and 5. Disobedience always leads to God's loving discipline if we are really His children. The despair we feel while under the hand of God's discipline is there to lead us to repentance. The gospel is clearly seen as God graciously delivers those who cry out to Him with repentant hearts. In this story God uses the unlikely combination of the prophetess Deborah, the hesitant warrior Barak and the deceptive Jael to deliver his people.

Are You In or Out?

In this message from Joshua 24, Pastor David Fandey of The Fields concludes our study in Joshua by exploring the last words of Joshua to his people. Here Joshua first reminds them of what got them to where they are that day. The focus is on God and his actions on their behalf. With this reminder, Joshua goes on to demand a decision from the people, who are they going to serve, God or something else? Today we are faced with the same challenge, who or what are we going to serve? What is worth trading your life for?

Clinging for Life

Pastor David Fandey of The Fields church continues our study through Joshua with a look at chapter 23. There we find Joshua in his old age bringing Israel together to remind, whatever the circumstances, the hard times you have faced during the conquest of The Promised Land or the rest that God is now giving you, don't forget about God! Cling to Him with all that you have. Love Him with all that you are. He is the one who has provided for you so don't grow complacent. But if you do forget Him, He will get your attention and it might be kind of painful. He does that because He loves us too much to let us stray away forever.

Faithful Wounds

As Pastor David Fandey looks at Joshua 22 we learn how to handle a situation where it appears that a brother or sister in Christ is caught up in sin. We see that the loving thing to do is to get involved, to make the effort to find out the facts and then if the facts point to a sin problem, lovingly speak the truth. If we really love people and have their best interests in mind, we will humbly serve them by actively helping them work through repentance, reconciliation and restoration with God and man.

The Giver of the Gift

This Christmas Pastor David Fandey of The Fields draws our attention to "The Giver of the Gift". It makes sense to focus on Jesus at Christmas. Jesus is the gift of God, and in Jesus God gave his very best. But how often do we focus on the giver of the gift, God the Father? "God so loved the world that He gave..." The gift is awesome but as we contemplate the one who sent Jesus and His motivation for giving the gift, we will appreciate the gift all the more.

Ask God First

This week Pastor David Fandey of The Fields discusses Joshua 9. Here we see that after all the emphasis God has put on the importance of sticking to His word, knowing it and seeking Him for guidance, Israel steps out on their own and makes yet another poor decision early on in their conquest of Canaan. Their failure to inquire of the Lord before making an important decision results in being deceived by their enemies. While God can use their disobedience and eventually turn it around for good, it's always better to stick to plan A which is God's plan.

Before All Else Fails, Follow the Instructions

God is not messing around when He tells us how He wants us to live and what's good for us. As Pastor David Fandey from The Fields continues our study in Joshua we will see the devastating consequences that disobedience causes for us and those in our community. However, we will also find God's restoration and blessing for His people when they deal with their sin and once again return to follow His ways.

It's God's Deal

Pastor David Fandey from The Fields continues our study in Joshua by looking at conquest of Jericho found in chapters 5&6. In chapter 5 we see Israel's preparations before going to war deal mostly with spiritual issues, not military issues. Then we learn of God's battle plan which makes no military sense at all. This all points to it being God's deal, that it is God who will give them the land. Finally, we wrestle through the issue of God's incredible holiness and His zero tolerance for sin and yet His amazing love and grace and provision to take care of our sin through His son Jesus Christ.

God's Mile Markers

Pastor David Fandey from The Fields continues our study in Joshua by looking
at chapters 3 & 4. As Israel follows God's leading into the Promised Land
they come up against an impossible obstacle in their path, a flooded Jordan
river. God does the miraculous, parting the waters for them to cross, to
remind them for generations to come that where God leads He always provides.
As we remember God's provision for us in the past we can courageously face
the future.

A Risky Faith

This week Pastor David Fandey from The Fields digs into Joshua 2. In this chapter we see two important things going on. First, we see Joshua sending out spies on a recon mission to check out the land they are about to enter. Here learn the importance of living up to our responsibilities when God calls His people forward to fulfill His plans for them. Secondly, we'll hear about a Canaanite prostitute named Rahab who is saved by God because of her faith in Him. We learn of God's amazing grace that despite His need to judge and deal with sin, He also forgives and accepts those who to turn to Him in faith. That is the good news of the Gospel!

Have Courage!

Pastor David Fandey from The Fields introduces the book of Joshua. God's
plan was to establish a people that would know and follow Him and serve as a
guide to the nations of the world so that the whole world would know God.
That involved occupying and living in the land that was promised to Abraham.
God is with Joshua as he encourages him to courageously trust and commit
himself to God's Word. Today, God also has a mission for his people, the
church, and that's to make disciples of all people. Again we are promised
His presence and the resources to get the job done!

Growing Through Faith

Pastor David Fandey of The Fields discusses the importance of faith as it
relates to growth as a follower of Jesus Christ. God is pleased when we have
faith in him, when we learn to trust him. In fact, Hebrews 11:6 says it's
impossible to please God without faith. Faith expresses our dependence upon
him. Prayer is one way we demonstrate our faith; action is another. In the
message he takes a look at what faith is, the importance of the object of
faith, some great biblical examples of faith from Hebrews 11, and finally
some personal application of the faith principle.

Salt and Light

In this intro to the Sermon on the Mount, we study the Beatitudes. Are they a prescription for a righteousness we can never attain, or a description of lives transformed by Christ?

Three Strikes

We will all be tempted. While it is not a sin to be tempted, temptation can lead to sin, if we are not prepared. Matthew 4 describes how Jesus successfully prepared for and faced off temptation.

Great Expectations

Just like the Hebrews, we all have a preconceived notion about the Messiah and what his purposes and plans are. Just like the Hebrews, we need to critically analyze our worldview to see how our impression of Jesus stacks up against the Jesus clearly described in the Bible.
